Fibrus has now delivered its network to 250,000 rural premises and connected more than 36,000 customers.

“To increase coverage by 150 per cent in one year is an awesome achievement, but to do so whilst simultaneously driving our customer numbers fivefold is especially pleasing,” said CEO Dominic Kearns, speaking ahead of an event to mark the milestone.

The company has also increased its ambitions in Northern Ireland, with a higher number of its million homes target to be delivered in this region.

The company had initially identified 350,000 local homes and is increased this target by another 100,000.

When addressing the current market and talk of consolidation, Kearns says: “The tide is going out and it’s going to be interesting to see who’s wearing swimwear.

“If altnets aren’t building at scale by now, things become significantly more challenging. Many think ‘build it and they will come’. They are in for a rude awakening.”

He also addresses the storm that is brewing around the Equinox 2 phase of discounted pricing.

“Although retail is our focus right now, the Equinox pricing strategy should be a major concern for Ofcom. BT is deploying every step in the incumbent playbook to kill off the smaller players,” adds Kearns.

“If Ofcom does not recognise Equinox for what it is and waves through Equinox 2, that would be a massive call and I wouldn’t like to be an altnet relying on wholesale to deliver my business case.”
