Three-quarters of UK premises now have the option of buying a Gigabit broadband connection, according to the latest data from ThinkBroadband.

This comes shortly after news that Fibre services have been made available to half of UK homes and businesses.

This data is based on UK premises that can access full fibre and DOCSIS 3.1 services (49.85% or VMO2 and its DOCSIS 3.1. services (25.17%).

With both technologies considered, ThinkBroadband estimates that the UK government will hit its 85% Gigabit coverage plans by the end of 2025. Looking at fibre alone this will be reached in June 2026.

Out of 398 local authorities 125 have Gigabit coverage at or above 85% and a further 10 are expected to pass the same mark in the next few weeks.

ThinkBroadband also lists the 10 council areas where projections suggest a wait of over 15 years to see 85% coverage. These are High Peak District, Sir Ynys Mon (Anglesey), Copeland District, Rossendale District, North Warwickshire District, West Devon District, Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands and the Isles of Scilly.
