The Government has launched a £7m fund to explore how rural communities can benefit from better access to wireless networks.

The fund will test new ways of blending satellite, wireless and fixed line internet connectivity to support farmers in using new agricultural technologies and tourism businesses in developing virtual experiences.

The new fund comes alongside the government’s commitment to deliver broadband via satellite connectivity for up to 35,000 homes in remote parts of the UK through an £8m grant scheme.

Progress has been made over the last decade to support connectivity in rural areas. Over 75% of UK premises can now access gigabit-capable broadband, up from 6% at the beginning of 2019.
