More than 816,000 homes and businesses in Wales can now access Openreach’s network, with 277,000 premises having taken up services so far.

This represents the 50% coverage milestone for Openreach, with £240m having been invested in the project.

Small towns and villages in north Wales dominate Openreach’s list of hotspots with the highest levels of full fibre.

Buckley in Flintshire has the highest coverage with more than nine out of every 10 properties. The village of Old Colwyn in Conwy has the second-best coverage, with Llangennech near Llanelli in third spot.

Kim Mears, Chair of the Openreach Wales Board, said: “As one of the largest employers in Wales our engineers are building our network in communities where we ourselves live and work.”

“Having fast reliable connectivity is a huge game-changer in terms of how families live their lives, how our children learn and how our businesses prosper.”

Work is continuing in places like St Asaph, Ebbw Vale and Tenby as well as Cardiff, Swansea, Newport.

A partnership between Openreach and the Welsh Government will see a further 44,000 homes and businesses across some of the harder to reach areas of Wales benefit from improved connectivity.
