More than half of all premises in Ayrshire can now access Openreach’s fibre network which passes 96,000 homes and 4,800 businesses in the county.

In Kilmarnock, more than 25,000 properties can now access full fibre, with a third signing up. Most premises in Ardrossan (85%) and Ayr (64%) can also upgrade.

Across the three local authority areas, 27% of premises have converted to fibre where it’s available, leaving a pool of 73,000 who have not made the switch.

In the seaside town of Troon, where almost 6,000 properties could now upgrade, just 16 per cent have signed up so far.

More Ayrshire properties will get fibre access in 2023 with work ongoing in Kilwinning and West Kilbride.

Councillor Douglas Reid, leader of East Ayrshire Council and Chair of the Ayrshire Economic Joint Committee, added: “It's vital that no demographic or geographic area is left behind if we are to build a stronger, more prosperous and fairer economy.”
