Virgin Media O2’s Gig 1 broadband network now passes 1.3 million Scottish homes following continued network expansion works.

Since the company began investing to expand its broadband network in Scotland in 2015, it has grown to reach more than half of all Scottish homes

Virgin Media O2’s 5G coverage also reaches over 50% of Scotland’s population, with 28,000 postcodes added over the past year.

Coverage in the most rural areas is being expanded through the Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme.

In Scotland just 44% of landmass currently gets 4G signal from all four mobile network operators, but this will increase to 74% after the SRN programme has been fully delivered.

Virgin Media O2 has announced connectivity improvements in Traquair (Peeblesshire), Balmacara (Ross-shire), and Denholm (Scottish Borders) in recent weeks.

Colin Brown, Director for Network Build in Scotland at VMO2, said: “We’re investing huge sums to upgrade our gigabit network, improve 4G in rural areas and roll out 5G.”
