Cumbria digital rollout continues

More than 95% of residents across Cumbria can access broadband speeds of above 30Mbps thanks to strong levels of investment into digital infrastructure of over £400m between commercial and public funded programmes.

Cumberland Council is praising the progress made to improve connectivity, with continued investment helping 62% of homes and businesses able to access gigabit speeds, with work undertaken by network providers including Openreach (BT), nexfibre (Virgin Media), Fibrus, B4RN and others.

Current mobile connectivity and outdoor 4G geographic coverage levels are at over 91% from at least one mobile provider and 65% from all 4 major UK network providers.

Cllr Chris Southward, Cumberland Council’s Cabinet Member for Digital Connectivity and Customer Focus and Digital Champion said: “A huge amount of progress has been made in improving digital connectivity across the Cumberland area and sees many businesses and residents now reaping the benefits this brings.”

The ongoing digital investment is part of the £108m Project Gigabit rollout contract for Cumbria which was awarded to Fibrus in November 2022 and aims to cover 60,000 hard-to-reach premises by 2026.
