Openreach engineers are starting work in Frome with the aim of passing most local premises within the next 12-18 months.
Drew Barrett, Senior Engineering Manager for Openreach, said: “We're working closely with Somerset County Council to keep disruption to a minimum.
“Wherever possible, we’ll use our existing network of ducts and poles to avoid roadworks, new street furniture and disturbance.”
Frome joins Openreach’s network in the West which includes more than 170 rural and coastal exchange areas.
Its fibre network in the south west now reaches more than 800,000 properties.
