Openreach is urging homes and businesses in Torbay to upgrade to fibre as its uptake rate sits at 18%, below the national average of 20%.

Following an investment of more than £16m, 55,000 Torbay homes can now access fibre with engineers recently completing work in Torquay, St Marychurch, Shiphay, Chelston, Brixham and Paignton.

Openreach reiterates the benefits of upgrading, citing that connecting everyone in the south west to fibre broadband would create a £4.3bn boost to the local economy.

Martin Williams, Openreach’s regional director for the south west, said: “Fibre broadband gives households and businesses a boost as they continue to live and work through the pandemic. It can have a huge impact on people’s daily lives and it’s great for the economy too.”

Openreach has announced plans to invest in fibre broadband for the majority of premises in dozens of towns and villages across the south west, including Dartmouth, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Totnes.
