AllPoints Fibre Networks has agreed a new multi-million-pound partnership with BT Wholesale as it continues to expand the reach of its full fibre broadband offering.
Ookla’s latest Speedtest Intelligence Data makes evident the important role of altnets in the UK’s gigabit future, with fibre providers challenging the seven large ISP incumbents.
The report finds that most homes in the UK (97%) can access a superfast broadband connection.
Whilst this drops to around a third for FTTP services, the competitive alternative landscape accounts for some of the fastest speeds across the country.
The data shows that altnets lead speeds in London, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Manchester, as well as across several counties.
During Q1-Q2 2022, Virgin Media O2 led for speed in eight of the 12 cities tested and Hyperoptic had the fastest speeds in Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester.
Northern Ireland ranked first for median download speed due to project stratum being delivered by Fibrus, backed by £165m.
“The U.K. fibre market is attracting new funding, which allows alternative providers to expand their fibre footprint,” reads the report.
“Public funding has helped facilitate the emergence of fibre ISPs in rural areas where fibre deployment is not commercially viable. Other AltNets are well established, deploying and operating in areas with high density.”
