Carlisle MP John Stevenson recently met with Openreach engineers in Cumbria, where the provider’s network currently reaches more than 50,000 properties, an investment of £15m.

He was given a tour of the ongoing build, starting with a visit to the local telephone exchange before driving to Harraby and Caldewgate to see the final stage network and to talk to the local engineers and build partner, Morrison Telecom.

The Openreach network in Cumbria is currently available to communities including Appleby, Barrow in Furness, Carlisle, Dalton in Furness, Kendal, Longtown and Milnthorpe.

It plans to build in thirty Cumbrian locations such as Cleator Moor, Cockermouth, Keswick, Millom, Penrith and Shap.

Stevenson said: “This is a significant local investment and great news for people living and working here in Carlisle and elsewhere in Cumbria, in both our urban and rural communities.
