Over half of UK homes (15.4 million or 52%) can now access fibre services according to Ofcom’s Summer update, an increase of 15 percentage points in one year and four percentage points since its Spring 2023 update.
The coverage varies across the UK, with homes in Northern Ireland having the greatest access to fibre (90%), followed by England (51%), Wales (50%) and Scotland (49%).
The report notes: “This is driven predominantly through deployments by the larger fibre infrastructure operators but supported by several smaller providers across the UK serving individual communities and regions.”
The number of homes able to access gigabit-capable broadband is almost at 22.4 million (75%), up from 21.9 million since Ofcom’s last update. Superfast broadband coverage remains at 97%.
The number of premises unable to get access to decent broadband has dropped from 68,000 to 62,000 premises.
The UK’s 5G coverage is increasing steadily with 85% of premises being able to get a 5G signal outdoors from at least one mobile network operator.
