A recent survey from bOnline has shown that many SMEs are unsure about the availability of altnet in their area, with confusion over the UK’s broadband roll-out strategy.
Openreach has begun work to extend its fibre network in Northumberland to the town of Ashington.
Engineers have started work and aim to reach most local homes and businesses over the next 12-18 months.
Regional Partnership Director for Scotland and the North Robert Thorburn, said: “Ashington is part of our balanced build across Northumberland which includes more than 25 towns and villages.
“We want to make sure that progress is evenly spread and that people in all parts of Northumberland can be online.”
Openreach’s fibre network in Northumberland now reaches more than 40,000 properties, and the company plans to roll out the new technology to 25 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026.
Further investment is planned in other towns such as Amble, Morpeth, Longframlington, Shilbottle and Seahouses.
