Wessex Internet has connected its first customer in South Wiltshire as part of an £18.8 million contract awarded by Project Gigabit, bringing faster broadband to around 14,500 residents across the region.
More than 600 public sector buildings in Wales have been connected to fibre as part of an £11.5m investment from the UK Government.
The project was the largest public sector broadband project funded by the UK Government across the whole of the UK and enables commercial broadband providers to deliver upgrades to surrounding homes and businesses.
The connections are live in public buildings across the Cardiff Capital Region (166), north Wales (311), Pembrokeshire (68) and rural areas (75).
Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart said: “Every day increasingly more public services are being delivered online. For those who do the vital work in these locations such as GP surgeries, day care centres and libraries, they will notice a transformation which will allow them to deliver their important work with greater ease.”
