The collective footprint of 103 altnet networks now covers 25% of the UK, according to the latest tracking data from thinkbroadband.

This database takes overbuild into consideration and looks at fibre providers excluding Openreach, Virgin Media and KCOM.

Its data also reveals the ten local councils with the most altnet coverage in the UK. Topping this list is City of Peterborough with 84% coverage.

Hammersmith and Fulham (83%), Coventry District (82%), Southend-on-Sea (78%), City of Westminster (77%), Milton Keynes (77%), Tower Hamlets (74%), Hyndburn District (74%), Newham (74%) and Aberdeen City (73%) round out the list.

The list is dominated by mature CityFibre build areas, which is to be expected as its footprint is more than twice as large as the next biggest altnet.

thinkbroadband adds: “For the public, the increased choice is generally seen as good, but of course, incredibly frustrating for those living a few miles away who might be seeing Openreach overbuild an altnet, or vice versa. In some places, you can have three alt-nets in addition to Openreach.”
