Wessex Internet has connected its first customer in South Wiltshire as part of an £18.8 million contract awarded by Project Gigabit, bringing faster broadband to around 14,500 residents across the region.
Quickline Communications has delivered gigabit broadband to a further 4,500 homes across rural West Yorkshire and the York area through its Project Gigabit build programme.
Communities in the area, including the villages of Escrick, Crofton, Elvington, Sutton upon Derwent and Wheldrake, are the first to benefit from a £60m government contract secured earlier this year.
The Project Gigabit contract will fund connections for over 28,000 hard-to-reach rural properties that would be too expensive to be connected to gigabit broadband through commercial rollout.
This is one of four contracts awarded to Quickline across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, which will bring over 170,000 premises out of broadband poverty.
Sean Royce, Quickline CEO, said: “Our mission is to connect these areas quickly and make a lasting impact.
“Access to reliable broadband is essential, and we are committed to helping our customers thrive in the digital world, not only through the deployment of full fibre but also through our broader social value programme.”
