A recent survey from bOnline has shown that many SMEs are unsure about the availability of altnet in their area, with confusion over the UK’s broadband roll-out strategy.
The west Wales beach of Mwnt is now ready for wave and web surfers as Openreach connects the nearby Caban Mwnt café to full fibre.
To connect the café Openreach engineers ran fibre from the exchange five kilometres away in Cardigan across fields and down narrow lanes, working closely with Ceredigion Council to minimise disruption.
The infrastructure enables LoRaWAN technology to be used that provides real time data on visitors, weather and alerts when the nearby defibrillator has been tampered with.
“Fibre enables our analytics systems which helps us determine we aren’t missing a trick when it comes to our opening times and general offer throughout the year, it also helps us keep secure with our new alarm system,” said Rachel Welch, owner of Caban Mwnt.
In addition to the café, Openreach also connected a nearby camp side and wedding venue.
“Not matter where you are in the world people now need and expect good connectivity. This infrastructure will provide a vital boost to the tourist economy as we go into summer,” added Connie Dixon, Partnership Director for Openreach in Wales.
