The Broadband Forum’s Fibre Access Network (FAN) Work Area has launched a project that will introduce energy-saving requirements for the industry to adhere to.
VMO2 has invested over £180m connecting more than 330,000 homes and businesses in Scotland since 2015 and is now taking steps to minimise the environmental impacts of the rollout.
The company has trialled the use of recycled aggregate while working with Glasgow City Council to expand its broadband network in Cranhill, Glasgow.
The trial saw the sustainably sourced materials undergo on-site testing and monitoring, enabling more expansive use of recycled materials in future.
VMO2 projects that switching to recycled aggregate could save more than 450 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
This was announced alongside a series of connectivity progress updates across Scotland, attended by Ivan McKee, the Minister for Business, Trade, Tourism and Enterprise.
“Improving our digital infrastructure is critically important and will help build a more prosperous, resilient, equal and sustainable economy as part of the National Strategy for Economic Transformation,” he said.
