A recent survey from bOnline has shown that many SMEs are unsure about the availability of altnet in their area, with confusion over the UK’s broadband roll-out strategy.
Virgin Media O2’s network is now available to an additional 12,000 homes and businesses in Heysham and Lancaster.
The network has been built on behalf of nexfibre, which is investing £4.5bn to deliver high-speed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connections to 5 million homes across the UK by 2026.
County Councillor Aidy Riggott, cabinet member for Economic Development and Growth, said: “This step forward aligns strongly with Lancashire’s broader economic and regeneration activities and will build on and support projects delivered by the County Council.”
Rajiv Datta, CEO at nexfibre added: “We continue our mission to build and expand our network in suburban and semi-rural areas, play our part in helping to close the digital divide and boost the UK economy.”
nexfibre is a joint venture between InfraVia Capital Partners, Liberty Global and Telefónica and is financed with £4.5bn of equity and debt investment.
It will initially roll out fibre to five million homes not currently served by Virgin Media O2’s network by 2026, with the opportunity to expand to an additional two million homes.
