A recent survey from bOnline has shown that many SMEs are unsure about the availability of altnet in their area, with confusion over the UK’s broadband roll-out strategy.
Openreach’s full fibre network is now available to 12.5 million UK premises, marking the half-way point in its nationwide plan to reach 25 million homes and businesses with the technology by the end of 2026.
The footprint includes more than 20,000 medical facilities and care homes; 18,000 educational buildings; and more than 3.6 million homes in rural areas.
It also serves 2,500 banks and financial buildings, 1,500 libraries, art centres and museums, and 1,200 emergency services buildings including coastguard and mountain rescue.
The company intends to keep building after it reaches the 25 million target, reaching up to 30 million premises with by the end of 2030. Openreach’s current build rate is 60k new premises passed a week.
More than four million homes and businesses have connected to the new network with the base by more than 30k new orders every week

Alongside this milestone, the provider has published plans to deliver its network in another 142 locations, covering around 1.4 million premises in hardest to reach, most rural communities in the UK.
