A recent survey from bOnline has shown that many SMEs are unsure about the availability of altnet in their area, with confusion over the UK’s broadband roll-out strategy.
Virgin Media O2 is extending its FTTP build to cover 23 million premises by 2027 through a new joint fibre venture.
Liberty Global and Telefónia have begun discussions with a number of potential financial partners to participate in this new venture, which will add seven million premises in greenbelt areas to VMO2’s network plans.
VMO2 will act as an anchor tenant of the network which will be available to other ISPs on a wholesale basis. As this extends the company’s total reach it provides VMO2 with an incremental growth opportunity by offering services to a wider pool of customers.
“As part of our mission to upgrade the UK, we expanded our 5G coverage, completed our gigabit rollout as promised, and we now plan to extend our footprint to around 23 million premises through a new fibre venture being set up by our shareholders,” announced CEO Lutz Schüler in VMO2’s Q4 and full year results to 31 December 2021.

VMO2 delivered £10.4bn of transaction adjusted revenue an saw 2% growth in transaction adjusted EBITDA to £3.7bn.
